Lessons on Life   生命的功課


 There was a man who had four sons. 
He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. 
So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, 
to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.  
有一個人,他有四個兒子。
他希望他的兒子能夠學會不要太快對事情下結論,
所以,他依次給他四個孩子一個問題,
要他們分別出去遠方看一顆桃子樹。

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, 
the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall. 
大兒子在冬天前往,二兒子在春天,
三兒子在夏天,小兒子則是在秋天前往

When they had all gone and come back, 
he called them together to describe what they had seen. 
The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. 當他們都前去也都返家之後,
他把他們一起叫到跟前形容他們所看到的情景,
大兒子說那棵數很醜、枯槁、扭曲。

The second son said no it was covered with green buds 
and full of promise. 
二兒子則說,不是這樣子,
這棵樹被青青的嫩芽所覆蓋,充滿了盼望。

The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms 
that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, 
it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen. 
三兒子不同意,他說樹上花朵綻放、充滿香氣,
看起來十分美麗,這美景事他從來不曾見到過的。

The last son disagreed with all of them; 
he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, 
full of life and fulfillment. 
小兒子不同意他們三人的說法。
他說樹上結滿了果子、累累下垂。
充滿了生命果子與豐收。

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, 
because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life. 
這個人就對他四個兒子說:你們都是正確的。
因為你們四個人是在這棵樹的四個不同季節前往,
並且只看到其中一個季節的風景。

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, 
by only one season, and that the essence of who 
they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from 
that life can only be measured at the end, 
when all the seasons are up.
他告訴兒子們不可用一個季節的風景來評斷一棵樹或是一個人,
關於構成一個人是怎樣的一個人的要件,還有一個人生命的
歡愉、喜樂、愛,只能在他生命的盡頭時候來做衡量。

If you give up when it's winter, 
you will miss the promise of your spring, 
the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall. 
當你在冬天時候就放棄,
你就會錯過你生命春天的盼望、夏天的美麗、秋天的收成。

Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. 
不要讓一個季節的痛苦毀掉其他季節的喜樂。

Don't  judge life by one difficult season.  
Persevere through the difficult patches and better times 
are sure to come some time or later.
不要因為一個痛苦的季節就對人生下結論,
持守忍耐度過這段艱難,美好的日子將在不久之後來到。

Leaving only what is truly important

醒自己快死了,是我在人生中面臨重大決定時,所用過最重要的方法。 因為幾乎每件事-所有外界期望、所有的名聲、所有對困窘或失敗的恐懼-在面對死亡時,都消失了,只有最真實重要的東西才會留下。

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

醒自己快死了,是我所知避免掉入畏懼失去的陷阱裡最好的方法。人生不帶來、死不帶去,沒理由不能順心而為。

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Don't know what we lose


我們都不知道擁有些甚麼,直到失去它,
   還有,我們也都不知道我們漸漸失去些甚麼, 一直到它完全消失殆盡!

Farewell Address 


My dear Students:
         I want to say something to you today which I feel would not be appropriate to say at tomorrow's dinner that you are going to give in honor of us teachers. Today's words are not congratulatory, but words of advice and warning.
The time has come for me to retire, not only because I have come to the age of retirement, but also, after forty-five years of teaching. I am physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausted. You are probably the last class I shall ever teach. My hopes for you are high, and it is my fervent prayer that you will not disappoint me. During the past years, I have been deeply unhappy to see many of my students forget the warmth and enthusiasm of their student days only a few years after leaving school. They have become immersed in the sloughs of society and have lost the values and ideals of their youth. What has done this? The pursuit of money and power which has taken hold of their minds and souls.
Truly, money is important, but it does not deserve to be pursued with the best of your abilities. From the history of mankind, we well know that selfish wealth is something which ruins all that is good and beautiful in life. The pursuit of money for yourself will never satisfy you. The more you get, the more you will want. You will never get enough, and you won't stop pursuing money to the day you draw your last breath.

神:噢!你想訪問我?
人:是的!如果您有時間。
(微笑):我的時間是「永恆」,你有什麼問題?


人:您觀察人類,有那些事讓您最詫異
神:噢!人啦!
在幼兒時總覺萬事無趣,迫不及待的想長大。
  長大後卻又希望重返青春的童年。
  人啊!總為名利而不顧身體,卻又花下巨金妄想重得健康。
  人啊!為何每日為未來而焦慮,卻忘了現在。 如此,你們既沒活在現在,更沒活在未來。
  人啊!你們活著時候好像生命永無止境,而當死亡來臨時才覺悟自己的一生重未真正好好活過。
神握著我的手安靜了片刻….

人: 如果您是人間父母,您希望孩子們學到什麼?
(微笑):學到雖不能強使他人「愛」你,卻可改變自己成為一個「可愛」的人。
  學到人不要彼此比較。

  學到富人不在擁有多少,卻在需要不多。
  學到兩人間之情感能毀於旦夕,卻需漫長時間去補回。
  學到常常練習「原諒」。
  學到許多人不知如何表達他對你的「愛」,卻「愛」你至深。
  學到雖然面對同一件事,人人可有迥然不同的見解。
  學到被他人「原諒」是不完全的,除非你能「原諒」自己。

THE INTERVIEW WITH GOD

I dreamed I had an interview with God.
So, you would like to interview me? God asked.
If you have the time? I said.
God smiled. My time is eternity? What questions do you have in mind for me?

What surprises you most about humankind?  God answered...
That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again?

That they lose their health to make money..and then lose their money to restore their health?
That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present,
   such that they live in neither the present nor the future.?
"That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.?
God's hand took mine and we were silent for a while.


And then I asked... As a parent, what are some of life's lessons you want your children to learn?
To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves be loved?
To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others.?
To learn to forgive y practicing forgiveness?
To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love,
    and it can take many years to heal them?

To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.?
To learn that there are people who love them dearly,
   but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings?
To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently?
To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves?
"Thank you for your time," I said humbly.
"Is there anything else you would like your children to know?"

God smiled and said, Just know that I am here... always?

什麼叫作「貧窮」

一位大富豪想讓他的兒子體驗什麼叫作「貧窮」,於是就把他送到鄉下的窮親戚家去親身體驗。

他兒子在鄉下住了三天三夜。

在回家的路上,他父親在車裡問他:「你覺得怎麼樣?」
「很不錯」,兒子回答。「鄉下跟我們家有什麼區别嗎?」父親又問。
兒子說,有許多不一樣。
1.我們家有一條狗;他們家有四條。
2.我們家院子裡有個游泳池,裡面是加工處理過的水;他們家有個大池塘,水很清,裡面還游著各種各樣的魚。
3.我們的花園裡有電燈照明;他們的院子裡有星星和月亮照明。
4.我家的花園一直到圍牆邊;他們的院子一直延伸到天邊。
5.我們買飯吃;他們做飯吃。
6.我們聽CD;他們聽小鳥、青蛙和其它動物的音樂會,當他們在田裡工作時,所有這些美妙的音樂都會伴随着他們。
